About the Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche Tickets

For a city that sits at the base of the snow-covered Rocky Mountains, it took Denver long enough to get a pro hockey franchise. However, the Mile High City finally got a team in 1995 when the Quebec Nordiques relocated to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche. In the 20+ years since their move, Denver and the Avalanche have proven to be a perfect fit, with the franchise selling out 500 of their first 515 home games.

Instant Success

The Avalanche fit into Colorado right off the bat and immediately gave the city a Stanley Cup win in their inaugural season of 1995-96. Oddly enough, the Nordiques hadn’t won a playoff series since 1987 and had missed the playoffs entirely in six of their last eight seasons in Quebec. However, it only took the Avalanche one season to win a championship.

The winning didn’t stop there. The Avalanche won their first-ever Presidents’ Trophy the following year and reached the Western Conference Finals three times in the next four years. The team returned to the top of the mountain during the 2000-01 season, once again winning the Presidents’ Trophy before capturing the Stanley Cup for the second time in six years behind all-time greats like Joe Sakic, Ray Bourque, and Patrick Roy.

What Happened?

The Avalanche made the playoffs in each of their first 10 seasons in Colorado, but things took a sudden turn when they were swept by Anaheim in the 2006 Western Conference Semifinals. The team saw their playoff streak come to an end the next season, and Colorado only reached the playoffs three times in the next 10 years, winning just one playoff series during that span. They're far from the laughing stock of the NHL, but the Avalanche of the 2010s are also a far cry from the team that dominated the league in earlier years. Fingers crossed that they find their footing again soon!
