About the Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg Jets Tickets

Perhaps the best way to describe the Winnipeg Jets is to call them the Cleveland Browns of the NHL. That’s not to say they’ve endured years of losing, but rather a reference to the fact that the franchise moved away and was reborn again. The original Jets moved to Phoenix to become the Coyotes in 1996. But when the Atlanta Thrashers moved north in 2011, the Jets were brought back to life in Winnipeg.

Humble Beginnings

When they first became a team in 1972, the Jets weren’t even a part of the NHL – they were a member of the now-defunct World Hockey Association (WHA). Over their seven seasons in the WHA, the Jets won Avco Cup (the WHA’s Stanley Cup) three times. When the league folded, the NHL decided to bring the Jets into the mix.

But success was harder to come by after moving to the NHL – in 17 seasons, the Jets won just two playoff series. They missed the playoffs on six occasions and only twice advanced past the first round. Ultimately, the team was relocated to Phoenix and the city of Winnipeg spent over a decade without an NHL franchise.

Triumphant Return

In 2011, Truth North Sports & Entertainment, a Winnipeg-based company, bought the Atlanta Thrashers and made moves to bring them to Winnipeg. The team almost immediately sold 13,000 season tickets, showing how much the city missed having an NHL team, despite having the Moose in the AHL.

The Jets failed to qualify for the playoffs in five of their first six seasons back in Winnipeg, but they did make a surprising run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018. Fans are hoping it's a sign that brighter days are ahead for the Jets now that they’re back in Winnipeg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Jets play?

Since their return to Winnipeg in 2011, the Jets have played their home games at Bell MTS Place. The arena opened in 2004 in downtown Winnipeg to serve as the home of the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, with the hope that Winnipeg would someday have an NHL that could also call it home. The Jets now share Bell MTS Place with the Moose, who are their minor league affiliate.

When do Jets tickets go on sale?

Winnipeg Jets tickets go on sale before the NHL begins its regular season. In fact, cheap Jets tickets to games played at Bell MTS Place are available months in advance, as are Winnipeg Jets for away games. In other words, there’s no rush to check the Jets schedule. Just grab tickets whenever you’ve got the itch.

Is it better to buy Jets tickets in advance?

With Jets tickets being available so far ahead of time, it’s easy to buy tickets whenever you want to – but there’s little need to plan ahead. You can often get cheap last-minute tickets to Winnipeg Jets games by waiting to make your purchase until the very last minute. As game day gets closer and sellers drop their prices, fans reap the benefits.
