Gunna is an Atlanta-based rapper that grew in popularity during the late 2010’s thanks to a slew of features and mixtapes mostly beginning in 2016, from which he gained notoriety for his laid back tone atop of bass-rattling beats.
In 2013, he dropped his debut mixtape “Hard Body” and soon after was introduced to his mentor Young Thug. After signing to Thug’s label YSL Records, Gunna had a taste of fame when he appeared on Thug’s 2016 hit track “Floyd Mayweather” along with Travis Scott and Gucci Mane. He would go on to release his trio of “Drip Season” mixtapes in 2016-2018. “Drip Season 3” cemented his superstardom thanks to tracks like “Top Off” and “Oh Okay”.
In 2017, Gunna released the original “Drip or Drown” EP, featuring common collaborator Wheezy as the main producer. In 2018, Gunna also released a collab mixtape with fellow Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, aptly named “Drip Harder”, drawing inspiration from Gunna’s Drip Season mixtapes and Lil Baby’s series of “Hard” mixtapes.
By the time he had dropped his first full-length studio album in 2019, Gunna had little to prove as a rapper. “Drip or Drown 2” provided the same flows, cadences, and fire features that had made Gunna famous, along with knocking beats produced by Turbo and Wheezy. Tracks like “Outstanding”, “Cash War”, “3 Headed Snake”, and “Who You Foolin” show why Gunna will be a force in the industry for years to come.
