Metallica set out on their WorldWired tour starting in 2017. They extended the tour throughout 2018 to give more fans the chance to enjoy their live show. After that, the group was quiet for a few years and through the pandemic. They returned with new tour dates planned for 2022.

At the end of 2022, Metallica announced a new album and world tour called M72.
